Austin-based Stubb's BBQ to Feed the World

"I was born hungry, I want to feed the world"
C.B. "Stubb" Stubblefield was born in tiny Navasota, Texas in 1931.  His father was a Baptist preacher who would routinely feed his congregation on his homemade BBQ and it is there that legend says Stubb learned his love of food.  In 1967, he was discharged from the Army as a genuine decorated war hero.  Soon after he opened his own BBQ joint in Lubbock.  Stubb said he opened his own place because he couldn't find barbecue that had, "spirit and love and happiness and smiles. When I smell barbeque . . . I want to smell something that makes me feel better than I already feel."

It wasn't long before Stubb's Lubbock eatery was known statewide, not just for impeccable BBQ but also for great music.  To pay for dinner, many musicians would take the stage sometimes even accompanied by the man himself.  Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tom T. Hall, B.B. King or George Thorogood, to name a few, have graced the stage at Stubb's Bar-B-Q.

After being robbed by the IRS, Stubb was forced to close his beloved Lubbock restaurant.  But IRS thievery is nothing to a decorated veteran.  It wasn't long before Stubb was back on his feet in Austin.  First selling his famous BBQ out of a blues bar called Antone’s and not long after in a bright and shiny new Stubb's Bar-B-Q at 801 Red River St.  Today Stubb's Bar-B-Q is an Austin landmark.  Not only featuring the food that made him famous but also with plenty of live music which now includes a Gospel Brunch each Sunday.

Stubb is no longer with us but the company that bear's his name is following through on his pledge to Feed the World with the Stubb's Feed the World Tour.  Check out the dates to see when they'll be in your town:
