Cat Cora Speaks Out on Mississippi Prom Controversy

Many people do not know that Iron Chef Cat Cora, master of Mediterranean cuisine, author of Cooking From The Hip and chef/owner of Kouzzina by Cat Cora in Orlando was born in raised in Jackson, Mississippi.  Many people also do not know that Cora is a proud lesbian.  Cat and her partner Jennifer have four children together.  What is even more remarkable is the astonishing circumstances of each birth that have all of the children related both paternally and biologically to each mother.  It is one of the neatest stories I have ever read.

So when Constance McMillen decided she wanted to take her girlfriend to the prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School in North Mississippi the famous chef understood exactly how she felt.  Cora knew what it was like to grow up gay in the socially conservative Magnolia State.  That is why the usually quiet Cora decided to break her silence.

In a recent press release Chef Cora defended Constance McMillen while voicing her embarrassment at her home state saying, "I was that girl from Mississippi one time,” the Wingfield High School graduate said. “I hate seeing things that reinforce negative attitudes about Mississippi like this.” Cora added, “This is the 21st century. This is a time for us to unite and support each other,” she said. “This isn’t just for (McMillen’s) civil rights. This is for all Americans’ civil rights, whether they know it or not."
