Joe Bastianich (Vino Italiano: The Regional Wines of Italy) is the son of Chef Lydia Bastianich and was brought up in the world of food and wine in his parents’ restaurants. After ditching a Wall Street career for a year in Italy, he returned to New York and with his mother opened Becco, one of New York’s favorites for home-made pasta and a fixed price wine list.

Soon after his success at Becco, he partnered with Mario Batali and together they dominate New York’s dining scene with some of the best fine dining in the city including Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, Lupa Osteria Romana, Esca, Casa Mono, Bar Jamon, Otto Enoteca Pizzaria and the much celebrated Del Posto.

About the Bastianich Wines
In 1998, Joe and Lydia bought a vineyard in Buttrio, a town in the Colli Orientali DOC area; the Azienda Agricola. Bastianich presented its first impressive vintage in 1999 and has achieved notable success, earning the coveted Gambero Rosso Three-Glass award.

The family is very precise in their wine-making, controlling yields so that each individual vine produces one bottle of wine. They employ traditional manual methods in the vineyard and create wines that express the unique character of the land.

Vespa Bianco is the estate's primary wine, an excellent demonstration of the potential Friulian wine has for power and evolution; both this and the Vespa Rosso are blends of finished wines rather than "field blends," meaning that the different varieties are combined after fermentation. Tocai Plus is a powerful white that is enhanced through partial appassimento or drying and, ideally, with grapes affected by noble rot.
